On Thursday, February 12, the Iona College community welcomed employers from various professions into the Hynes West gym for the annual Spring Career and Internship Expo hosted by the Gerri Ripp Center for Career Development. In spite of the harsh weather conditions, which cut the Expo short by an hour, there was a great turn-out.
Students prepared for the expo weeks in advance as they revised their resumes and attended etiquette work shops on how to interact professionally with employers. "It’s all about marketing yourself,” says sophomore Rob Hines.
Keith Hassell, a career development specialist from the Gerri Ripp Center for Career Development, reported that "Students seemed to be very proactive this year, which can be seen in the numbers during our walk-in hours prior to the expo.”
The gym was transformed as 50 employers and over 300 students became acquainted with one another. "I felt overwhelmed at first but overall I thought it was beneficial,” say sophomore Ilana Morse. Students had the opportunity to learn more about different companies and employers as they visited all of the tables. Resumes in hand, students began meeting with employers one by one.

Every semester, the Gerri Ripp Center for Career Development offers students an invaluable opportunity to hand their resumes to employers in a very open atmosphere. The pressure of a one-on-one interview is replaced by relaxed conversations between hopeful students and supportive employers.
Iris Colón, an employee from Leake and Watts Services, Inc., a non-profit agency committed to helping individuals and families acquire basic educational services, considers the event a success considering the weather. She was pleased to see such a good turn out.

At the end of the Expo, several employers complimented Iona students by stating that "Compared to other expos, Iona students were extremely prepared and presented themselves in a very professional manner.” With companies such as The Dannon Company, NBC Universal, and Morgan Stanley in attendance, the compliments given by employers were well-taken and much deserved.
