Bill Martin '80 Inducted to Mass Track Hall of Fame
SEEKONK, MA - Former Iona College men's track and field standout and Goal Club Hall of Fame member Bill Martin '80was inducted to the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame this past weekend. Martin, 52, was honored for his standout running career.
Recognized as one of the top ten intermediate-distance runners in the world during his collegiate career,
Martin remains one of the finest runners in the history of the Iona track program. He was a five-time All-America, a three-time national champion in the 1,000 yard indoor run (1977, 1978, 1979), and a member of 17 United States National Teams.
Throughout his career, Martin continually rewrote the Iona record book. He was clocked with the nine fastest times ever at Iona in the 1,000 yard indoor run, with his best performance coming in the 1980 Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden where he ran a 2:06.8 to win the event, a school record that he still holds to this day. The mark was the fastest in the world that year and the third fastest in the history of the prestigious games.
Martin is also the school record holder in the outdoor 800 meter event with his 1:46.63 in the 1980 NCAA Championship. At the time of his graduation Martin held the record in the outdoor 1500, and the indoor 1k and mile events. The Norwalk Hourprinted a comprehensive article on Bill Martin's prestigious career. What a nice article. I must confess that i'm a bit envious of anyone who is currently working in the field of education; my teaching license just expired and I'm devastated. But I'm glad to know a bit about what has happened to a fellow classmate since 1980, :-)
